Product Description
These plans and instructions by kayak designer Nick Schade show you how to make your own wooden kayak paddle.
A wooden kayak paddle is a functional work of art that complements a wooden kayak and these plans will show you how to make one that is both strong and light for efficient paddling. The plans include templates for a range of blade sizes, so you can make a paddle that suits your paddling style, from efficient sea kayaking to high performance whitewater play.
The paddle is built from laminated wood and reinforced with fibreglass, according to your intended usage. It has efficient spoon blades and a comfortable oval shaft. It can be built with the blades feathered to the left or the right, or unfeathered.
The plans include one 24″ × 36″ (610 mm × 915 mm) sheet, including full size templates for a variety of different paddle sizes and illustrations of the steps involved in building your own paddle. Accompanying the plans are a complete set of instructions for building your paddle. Nick has also made a series of videos that describe the process in detail, starting with timber selection.
