Product Description
This is a boat that is hard to find: a lightweight kayak designed expressly for surfing. Nick Schade has applied his formidable skills in flat-plate-geometry design and come up with the Matunuck surf kayak.
Somewhat faster than I expected the beach approached. Pure fun but not for the wife.
M.P.
Even sturdily built, for survival in violent conditions, the Matunuck weighs only 21 pounds (9.5kg). The Matunuck has the speed to catch the big waves and the low moment of inertia means terrific responsiveness for spinning and cutting. Fins are optional: you'll only need them in the truly gnarly stuff, but ordinary fin boxes may be 'glassed into the hull.
Construction is straightforward from the kit. The panels and joints are pre-cut. The Matunuck in the photographs has been stained and varnished but you may finish the boat in whatever livery you fancy. Although it bears a passing resemblance to a whitewater kayak, the Matunuck is for surfing only.
The kit includes:
- Pre-cut wooden panels with pre-cut joints and pre-drilled tie holes
- Epoxy resin and activator
- Epoxy fillers
- Copper ties
- Woven glass fabric
- Woven glass tape
- Foam seat
- Adjustable footbraces
- Foam knee pads
- Comprehensive building manual
- Free technical support from a competent builder
Study manual
This is intended for pre-build study or to help with the decision to purchase. This is the comprehensive manual that accompanies the kit; reading it will help you decide whether or not you can build the boat. It describes all of the techniques that will be used during the build and also a step by step guide to construction. It contains a photograph or diagram of every step.
If, later, you decide to purchase the kit the cost of this will be deducted from the kit price.
The manual does not contain the cutting instructions so it is not possible to build the boat from scratch using only this.
Plans and manual (not required by kit purchasers)
These plans and manual contain sufficient information on the cutting of the panels to make it possible to build the boat from scratch rather than a kit. The plans include full size drawings.
Wood only
This option contains the pre-cut wooden components with pre-cut joints. It also contains the plans and manuals. It does not contain any of the epoxy to glue and coat the boat, the fabric or tape nor any of the hardware or rigging.
